So Stonemaier Games have finally revealed details on the next Wingspan expansion, the “Americas Expansion”, which will be available for preorder on January 21, 2026. However, the game itself will be available for online purchase as from mid-March this year.
From a quick look at the box format employed for this one (see reference shot), Stonemaier have adopted a somewhat similar format to the one originally used for the Europe expansion which also happened to be the first expansion in the series. By this I mean a kind of cuboid, rectangular box which appears to hint to the fact that there will be no full-sized boards inside as was the case for the Oceania and Asia expansion.
The new expansion will apparently feature birds from Mexico,
Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. As with the previous
expansions, this one was also designed by Elizabeth Hargrave with illustrations
provided by Natalia Rojas, Martha Clare and Ana Maria Martinez Jaramillo.
From notes available online, this expansion puts focus on a
new type of card that should provide an interesting twist to gameplay.
In fact, it will include smaller Hummingbird cards (44×67mm)
which will come with their own hummingbird garden board, tracks, and tokens.
Initial pointers indicate that these cards will introduce a new twist, distinct
from the usual brown/pink/yellow power structures in the core game and previous
expansions. They will in fact offer interaction with new goal tiles and player
mat overlays, creating a parallel mini‑game that will complement the
normal player aviary. We will therefore be getting a full hummingbird in-game “ecosystem”
which will include, tokens, tracks, overlays, as well as dedicated board.
However given the box format, I am guessing the board will be a smaller format
than the main player aviary boards that came with the Core and Oceania
expansions.
So apparently Hummingbirds will be key to this expansion as
they will provide different benefits as they travel between garden boards. The box will contain 111 new bird cards, 8
bonus cards, and 5 end-of-round goal tiles.
The expansion, plus the base game, supports one to five players and should
be playable in around 60-90 minutes. First time play and rules explanation
could extend this to around 120 minutes.
