The Definitive (or almost) Christmas Board Game Wishlist 2025: Fifteen Modern Must Buys for Every Table
Getting the Game Face on for Christmas
I think it’s clear to anyone who
visits my blog that I love board games! So, this Christmas, my goal is to
intrigue a few of you into buying at least one title that will become your
instant favourite! Lofty ambition perhaps on my part, but a challenge I
willingly accept. Board games are more popular than ever, with a huge range of
styles and levels of complexity. But with so many options to choose from,
picking the right title can be surprisingly tricky. In this write up I aim to
cut through that complexity, providing a rich short-list of fifteen modern
board games (three selections across five categories) to streamline the
Christmas 2025 Wishlist for players of all abilities. More importantly to offer
“you” some valid pointers on selecting your next game.
To ensure the final list is both
“award winning” and relevant to today’s trends, I have filtered each game
through the lens of recent gaming awards, community play metrics (e.g. from
Board Game Geek), and specialised site analysis (including board game review
videos on YouTube, great source there!). The term "modern" in this
context implies a focus on games released in 2024 and 2025, or alternatively
those receiving major critical acknowledgement during this period. So, no
golden oldies here! This in my opinion
will ensure that the final list of recommendations are current and (hopefully)
relatively easy to get your hands on.
NB - If you want to cut to the chase,
scroll to the bottom of this blog for links to local shops and websites where
you can purchase nearly all the recommended board game titles.
Global Awards and how they affect
choice.
If you look around on the internet,
you will note that there are three
primary awards which form and mold market perception and critical standing.
There are other award gatherings which I do not wish to berate in the least,
it’s just that these three impact a sizable segment of the market in what I see
as key board game markets.
Firstly, the Spiel des Jahres (aka SdJ), or the German Game of the Year which
has been active since 1978, is the global standard for mass market
accessibility. Its 2025 winner, Bomb
Busters, instantly garnered massive attention, reflecting the award’s
preference for titles that are easy to teach and appeal to the widest possible
audience. In
fact, news of the win immediately led to the title selling out quickly at major
retailers.
Secondly, the Golden Geek Awards (2006 to date) really help shine a spotlight
onto the preferences of dedicated board gaming hobbyists, offering distinct
categories that clearly define complexity levels. This is critical for
distinguishing between a “light” family game and a true “expert” strategy game.
The 2024 awards separated awards into Light, Medium, and Heavy Game of the
Year, alongside awards for Cooperative and Party games.
Thirdly, the As d'Or – Jeu de l’AnnĂ©e (1988 to date) reflects how well a game is received
in the European market, providing a helpful sense of its popularity. This has
supported broader interest in titles like the card game “Odin”, which have been
acknowledged in the category Family or Casual Games.
When you look at these awards you will
notice an important difference in focus. While the SdJ committee prioritises
titles that could serve as the ultimate accessible gateway experience (like the
cooperative Bomb Busters) the
hobbyist focused Golden Geek Awards distinguish between specific types of game
mechanics, validating titles like Castle
Combo (Light) and Flip 7 (Party).
This differentiation confirms that the German award aims to identify games with
a universal appeal, while the hobby-focused awards focus on game mechanics and
complexity.
Before going any further, I must point
out that there are other established board game award circuits out there, but I
tried to focus on what in my opinion are either the more venerable or the more
reputable ...or both. However, while we are at it some of the other established
board game awards include: -
●
The
Deutscher Spiele Preis (1990 to
date) which focus on expert level games
●
The
Dice Tower Awards (2007 to date) Run
by the Dice Tower network, respected for its broad category coverage &
●
The
UK Games Expo Awards (2007 to date):
Voted by judges and the public.
The Influence of Community and
Complexity (BGG Hotness and Weight)
Beyond formal recognition, I find that two metrics from Board Game Geek (BGG) provide additional insight into what people like to play.
I find that the BGG Hotness list is very important to go through, as a board game’s
constant appearance here, demonstrated by games such as Vantage or The Lord of the
Rings: Fate of the Fellowship, signals significant community anticipation
as well as volumes of recent play counts. Essentially this metric measures the
level of interest and engagement with the title. Inclusion here almost
guarantees the board game is currently sought after and perhaps worthy of your
coin.
Then there’s the BGG Weight Rating, a numerical value from one (lightest) to five
(heaviest), which serves as the definitive guide for defining categories. This
measure is used to separate the Strategy category (targeted at mid weight games, typically 2.5 to 3.5) from the Expert category (strictly heavy games, 4.0 and above). This prevents mixing up enjoyable,
average complexity games, with genuinely demanding titles (I think of the
latter as games having long play times and crunchy decision points throughout).
The Categories Covered here (A handy guide)
Back to my proposed short-list and for
the purpose of discussions later in this blog, the following board game
categories will be addressed: -
Family
Games
Family
Games are primarily
aimed at a younger audience while encouraging direct engagement from all family
members. This is the category where new, young board game enthusiasts are
formed. They are characterised by their ease of instruction and simple turn structures
yet remain sufficiently enjoyable to appeal to both children and adults, more
specifically, mums, dads and guardians.
Strategy
Games
Next, Strategy Games offer a more substantial experience and typically
involve a moderate learning curve, promising a more rewarding experience. They
often scale well, enabling players to gradually increase the complexity of
their decisions as they gain experience with the title, rather than relying
solely on initial rule intricacy.
Cooperative
Games
Then come Cooperative Games, one of the most popular categories today and a
personal favourite. These are strategic
in nature and require serious teamwork; players either win or lose as a team.
Successful cooperative titles often steadily increase in tension as the game
progresses, creating a compelling sense of urgency and resulting in highly
memorable game nights.
Expert
Games
Following these are Expert Games. These are more demanding
titles that feature an above-average learning curve. Decisions within these
games tend to be multilayered, calling upon a diverse set of skills from the
players involved. Engaging with these games is akin to performing an intricate,
high-stakes task. A complex challenge for those who seek it out, and for whom
the reward (mostly the gaming engagement itself) justifies the effort. As such,
I have included a selection of these titles.
Party
Games
Finally, a comprehensive list would be
incomplete without the enduring category of Party Games. They are often unpredictable, akin to opening a box of
unlabelled, assorted chocolates, but their broad appeal is undeniable. Their
success is entirely dependent on engagement; if even a single player fails to
participate, the game may quickly lose its momentum. Their unique appeal is
often rooted in the fact that sensible strategy is minimal, with the best
titles often featuring wacky and disruptive rules.
So now that I have presented you with the categories I will be engaging with, let’s dive deep into the games themselves, starting from the top.
(NB -
Estimated play times per complete game provided for each game are indicative and may vary
depending on your gaming group as well as on familiarity with the game. Play
times normally fall after a few plays.)
Family Games – Engaging Everyone
So, Family Games. What do I normally seek in games that fall under this grouping? They must be quick to teach newcomers; they must be highly accessible and perfectly suited for mixed age groups. Crucially, these games must have simple game mechanics while, more importantly, providing engagement without friction.
Bomb Busters (2 to 5 players - 15 to 30 min per mission objective)
The first game I am here proposing for your
attention, is also the
most prestigious selection in this list. This undisputed Spiel des Jahres 2025
winner is a cooperative game (yes some of
these titles will span categories, it happens) that revolves around bomb
disposal, demanding clever communication and logic from two to five players
aged 10 and over. The SdJ award committee's choice of a cooperative title
emphasises a shift toward more collaborative experiences in family gaming. Here
you have a game that will engage the collective brain juice of your entire
gaming group. It’s not by any means the first game to use a combo of
communication restriction and cooperative play; other titles like “The Crew”,
have done this before. Yet here with Bomb Busters, the intensity is taken up a
notch making each win feel satisfying. This is the kind of game you will want
to play more than once for sure. Game play is split up into missions with each
taking anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes to solve. The fact that there is this
split into missions means you can decide how long or how short your gaming
session will be, tailoring the experience accordingly.
Castle Combo ( 2 to 5 players - 15 to 30 minutes)
Castle
Combo secured the 2024
Golden Geek Light Game of the Year award. The game focuses on tile placement
and set collection, which provides satisfying depth that remains entirely
approachable. Its quality is further confirmed by its inclusion on the Spiel
des Jahres recommendation list, demonstrating wide recognition across different
award circuits.
Odin ( 2 to 6 players - 15 to 20
minutes)
Winning the As d'Or – Jeu de l'AnnĂ©e
Award in the Family/Casual Gamers category, Odin
(2025) is a quick, Viking-themed card game where players try to empty their
hands by playing stronger sets than others. Simple rules, fast turns, and great
for casual play. Perfect for casual family gatherings.
Strategy Games – Mid Weight
Masterpieces
Strategy games occupy the “middle of the road” tier, typically scoring between 2.5 and 3.5 on the BGG complexity scale. These titles feature deep strategic choices and satisfying resource management yet remain teachable in a short timeframe and can be completed in under two hours. The titles I have chosen here are titles that have done well on the award circuits and attracted a lot of community attention over the past several months.
Harmonies (1 to 4 players - 30 to 45 minutes)
Harmonies is considered a premier mid-weight
selection, having won the 2024 Golden Geek Medium Game of the Year.
This strategy game
focuses on tableau building and pattern completion, often described as a
relaxing yet competitive puzzle. YouTube reviews consistently praise the quality of its
components and the elegant implementation of its mechanisms. Interestingly this
is the first title I am proposing with a “solo” variant meaning you can play
the game against an in-game AI mechanism. This game reminds me of other nature
themed titles like “Meadow” and “Cascadia” with the latter being more of a
closer cousin to this one. The artwork is vibrant, quite frankly very
aesthetically pleasing. A contender for my collection...right after Bomb
Busters that is.
Endeavor: Deep Sea (1 to 4 players {Retail Version} - 60 to 120 minutes)
A Kennerspiel des Jahres 2025 winner, Endeavor: Deep Sea is automatically placed in the coveted ‘connoisseur’ category, which targets the mid weight audience specifically. The genre thrives on games that feel polished and fresh while using familiar mechanisms like worker placement or resource management with clever twists. This is a strategic game about exploring and protecting the ocean. You’ll build research teams, discover marine life, and balance progress with conservation. Smart, smooth, and surprisingly thematic. This is the first substantial game on my list. Yet I feel that this title can and will appeal to the strategists among you. It has enough crunchiness to keep you engaged without feeling overwhelming. Having said that, expect to dive frequently into the rulebook and on your first play add at least another 30 minutes to the estimated play time.
Vantage (1 to 6 players - 120 to 180 minutes)
This selection represents the highest level of current board game community buzz. Vantage, a significant 2025 release from designer Jamey Stegmaier (Stonemaier Games....also published other highly successful titles like Wingspan), has been a consistent presence on the BGG Hotness list throughout the year. While not yet award winning, the massive anticipation and high-profile nature of the publisher ensures this game is highly sought after and virtually guaranteed to deliver a high-quality strategic experience. This is an interesting title in that it is a cooperative, open-world simulation making the play time highly variable. With time, experienced players can theoretically finish a game in 90 minutes while groups focusing on exploration and discovery could well exceed the 180 minutes of continuous play. While the box does say that the game can take up to 6 players, consensus is that the best player count is 3 as this minimises downtime in between turns. Having said that, Vantage may still be eligible for 2026 awards, especially the Golden Geek Awards, Dice Tower Awards, and Kennerspiel des Jahres. We’ll have to wait and see.
Cooperative Games – Teamwork Makes
the Dream Work
Cooperative games are quite popular now, but I’ve been in love with them for quite some time now. I have bought many cooperative style games over the years. My collection includes games like Reiner Knizia's Lord of The Rings Board Game, team challenges like The Crew and Castle Panic, and two great Pandemic-style games (where you work together to stop a crisis): Fall of Rome and Wrath of the Lich King.
Because of this, I would be very happy
to add any of the games listed in this group to my collection if I get the
chance.
The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the
Fellowship (1 to 5 players - 60 to 150 minutes)
This 2025 release is a significant
cooperative strategy game designed by Matt Leacock, leveraging the popular Pandemic system and the Lord of the
Rings IP. Leacock’s
ability to successfully translate the high tension of the Pandemic engine into a rich, thematic setting is widely praised. Fate of the Fellowship feels like a
deeper experience than traditional cooperative games, with playtimes ranging
from 60 to 150 minutes and a mechanically rich design. Its immediate popularity
on the BGG Hotness confirms its status as the definitive thematic cooperative
game of 2025. It’s not without its flaws but could be a worthy addition to
anyone who likes the pandemic game engine as well as the Lord of the Rings
Franchise.
Bomb Busters (2 to 5 players - 15 to 30 min per mission objective)
Included again to highlight its status as the best light cooperative entry point. As the Spiel des Jahres 2025 winner, Bomb Busters provides an accessible, exciting collaborative puzzle that requires players to pool their knowledge to succeed. It is the perfect choice for families or groups new to the cooperative genre. However, that said, even cooperative game enthusiasts can have a great time playing this gaming title which is why I ordered this title in advance of the Christmas season.
The Lord of the Rings IP is everywhere lately, the fact that I am proposing two titles centred around this franchise in this short-list is proof enough. This small box card game won the 2024 Golden Geek Award for Cooperative Game, offering a unique twist on a traditional format. Trick taking games (think the classic card games “Hearts” or “Spades”) are usually competitive, but this design challenges players to work perfectly as a team, solving missions while adhering to strict communication limits. This selection diversifies the cooperative category, offering a fast, nontraditional puzzle for card game fans. Also, the artwork is gorgeous which makes handling this game that much more special. This format is not new (The Crew: The Quest for Planet 9 adopted a similar trick-taking mechanism) but the interpretation is. The full game unfolds across 18 narrative chapters, each introducing new characters, rules, and challenges. Obviously if you decide to go for the whole hog as they say, you will need to set aside at least two gaming sessions of around 180 minutes each or, if you would like to take it at a more leisurely pace, three sessions of 120 minutes each. However, it does work equally well if you decide to play just one, two or three chapters, in which case you can do this in around 30 to 60 minutes.
Expert Games – The Deep End of the
Hobby
The Expert category is reserved for games with substantial learning curves, high complexity (BGG weight 4.0 or higher), long playtime, and multilayered strategic depth. These are games for dedicated board gaming pros!
SETI: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (1 to 4 players - 40 to
160 minutes)
The most critically acclaimed heavy
game of the past year is SETI: Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence, winner of the 2024 Golden Geek Heavy Game of
the Year. This complex game frequently appears high on BGG Hotness lists, cementing
its popularity within the board gaming community. In SETI, players lead a
scientific institution, launching probes, scanning distant stars, developing
technology, and analyzing data to discover traces of alien life across five
rounds. The game features a rotating four-layer solar system and multi-use
cards. I don’t have much else to add here other than that it has been lauded as
one of the best games in its category in the past couple of years.
Kutná Hora: La Cité de l'Argent (2 to 4 players - 60 to 120 minutes)
An As
d'Or – Jeu de l'AnnĂ©e "Expert", Kutná Hora comes with a BGG weight approaching
3.33 which is misleading in this instance. Carrying an on-the-box playtime
duration of up to 120 minutes, this is no middle weight game as the 3.33 score
might suggest. Kutná Hora is a strategic city-building game set in medieval
Bohemia. You’ll mine silver, construct buildings, and shape the town’s economy,
where supply and demand shift based on player actions. Smart planning and
timing are key as you balance personal gain with the city’s growth. Many
players suggest that the competition and dynamic economy are at their best with
4 players.
Arcs ( 2 to 4 players - 60 to 120 minutes)
Arcs secured multiple awards at the Golden
Geek 2024 Awards, winning both the Innovative Game and Wargame categories, and
achieving 2nd place in the Heavy GOTY category. This impressive performance
reflects a trend where heavy strategy games are incorporating elements of
direct conflict, area control, and player asymmetry previously associated only
with traditional wargaming. Arcs is a space opera strategy game where 2 to 4 players
compete for galactic dominance using a unique card-driven action system.
Players manage their fleets, develop their territories, and battle rivals
across the galaxy in a series of short, highly interactive chapters. Play time
however can vary significantly, especially for the first few games, and is
highly dependent on player familiarity and individual player’s tendencies and
play styles.
Party Games – Guaranteed Laughter
Party games must accommodate large groups, feature very short play times (ideally under 30 minutes), and maximise high interaction, focusing on immediate decisions, luck, or social elements. While I am not a fan, there are some very entertaining games out there which don’t feel like complete time wasters. It’s with these in mind that I came up with a short list of three titles that will reel in the laughs. Just, don’t play with cardsharps or impenitent hecklers...you won’t enjoy it...unless “you” happen to be the villain.
Flip 7 (3 or more players - 20 minutes)
Flip
7 is the reigning
champion of the genre, having won the 2024 Golden Geek Party Game award and
receiving a nomination for the Spiel des Jahres 2025. This press your luck card
game boasts exceptional scalability, supporting three or more players (the
publisher lists up to 99 which is a bit farfetched). Its combination of quick
teaching time and high-tension luck pushing makes it an ideal choice for
chaotic holiday gatherings. Emphasis on Chaos here but it does appeal to that
gambling, risk taker latent in almost all gamers. I must admit the game can be
fun but, word for the wise, take it seriously at your own risk!
Hot Streak (2 to 9 players - 20 minutes)
Cited by review sites as the 'new
hotness of 2025' and an excellent filler game,' Hot Streak’ has been highly visible on the BGG Hotness list this
year. This modern, gambling themed racing game supports 2–9 players and
combines drafting and deck manipulation to deliver a fun, risk taking
experience in approximately 20 minutes. This is pure chaos with little agency
and demands player interaction. Don’t table to an uptight crowd of players or
it will fail, miserably!
Trio (3 to 6 players - 15 minutes)
Winner of the As d'Or – Jeu de l'AnnĂ©e
2024, Trio is a snappy memory and deduction card game where players race to
collect sets of three matching numbers. You’ll ask others for their highest or
lowest card, flip cards from the centre, and try to spot patterns as you go.
It’s super easy to learn, plays in under 20 minutes, and works brilliantly with
3 to 6 players. Great for families, dinner parties, or a cheeky warm-up before
heavier games.

A Tabletop Christmas Awaits
So here it is! This shortlist offers, in my opinion, a good blend of critical acclaim and community enthusiasm across the spectrum of modern board gaming. From the approachable cooperative fun of Bomb Busters to the strategic depth of SETI, these titles represent the best and most sought-after games of the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Given the demand for these award-winning titles I strongly advised you to secure your copies early to avoid disappointment during the busy Christmas season. I feel that a Christmas-themed board gaming event featuring any of these fifteen games is guaranteed to be a hit.
Here’s
where you can get your copies of these 15 games!
For the titles available in Malta, I
strongly recommend buying local. It's often cheaper as you will not have to pay
any shipping costs, and you can collect the game straight away. For the few
that are missing, you will need to check international retailers, though it may
be possible to arrange something through a local board game stockist.
Also be careful when buying from sites
such as Temu. While they do carry good, original titles, they also tend to
carry “seconds” or knockoffs at a much lower price point. If the latter does
not bother you, that's fine. However, if you do opt to buy “seconds” at a much
cheaper price point (it could be anywhere from 35% to 50% less) expect to have
scuffed or slightly torn boxes. Knockoffs...are knockoffs basically copying the
look and feel of an established title but with different names and some minor
rule changes. I’m never too keen on these myself.
